An officer from the Yonkers Police Department on patrol at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 22 near the intersection of Oak Street and Chestnut Street spotted Yonkers resident Sirlarry Washington, 33, removing debris from the bed of the pickup truck and depositing it onto the roadway.

Police said that after observing Washington for several minutes, they determined that it was an incident of illegal dumping, and Washington was taken into police custody without further incident. Officers charged Washington with a city ordinance violation for dumping prohibited materials.

At the time of his arrest, Washington’s 2008 Dodge pickup was impounded at the scene and local officials seek to seize the vehicle in accordance with the city’s anti-dumping legislation.

"We have zero tolerance for anyone who thinks they can illegally dump trash in Yonkers,” Mayor Mike Spano said. “Illegal dumping can diminish the quality of life in our city and we will not accept it.  I commend our Yonkers Police Department on this arrest and hope it serves as an example to deter others from making the same mistake.”

Yonkers First Deputy Chief Tim Hodges added that “I commend our patrol officers for their proactive efforts in fighting illegal dumping.  Let this arrest serve as a warning to others who think they can dump on Yonkers – the Yonkers Police Department is committed to finding you, arresting you, and cleaning up our streets.”
